Can I just write one check and call it good?
Yes! We often have parents write us a check before the fall musical and ahead of the spring play instead of sending donations here and there. Checks should be made payable to "LSHS Theatre Parents".
Please mail them to:
LSHS High School, Attention: Theatre Parents/Micah Hensley
400 SW Blue Pkwy
Lee's Summit, MO 64063.
Can I send money another way?
Yes! We have a Square account that you can deposit money into. Please specify what you would like for us to use it for, if anything specific.
What are cast breakfasts?
The week of opening night, we provide breakfast weekly before school. These are typically themed: one day is a "cereal bar", another bagels/donuts/fruit, then the cast favorite: hot breakfast casseroles. We count on donations to pull this off. Donations need to be in early - at least by 7:45am on Friday (late start day) and 6:45am M,T,W,Th. Sending the item with your student is fine, as long as the student shows up at those times. (We often have students showing up when they typically arrive at school, and by then it is too late.)
What is "wet" and "dry" tech?
Fancy theatre terms. "Wet" tech is show blocking/staging/prep with the actors present. "Dry" tech is the same - but with no actors - the crews work on lighting, sound effects etc. These are typically very long days for the students, so we try to provide dinner and/or snacks. Theatre Parents Booster pays for dinner (unless donated) and snacks we typically ask for donations.
What are "Cappies", the Cappies dinner, and the Cappies gala?
"Cappies" are student critics. Basically schools from around the area send students to shows and then those students write-up a review of the show. The night all the Cappies come to our show, we provide them dinner - usually based on the theme of the show with decorations and such. The Cappies also put in votes for things like "Best Actor, Best Actress" etc. and give out awards at the "Cappies Gala." Much like the Golden Globes.
What are Blue Star Awards?
These are the Tony's for the area schools' theatre programs. Very similar to the Cappies Gala, with awards ranging from best production to best sound and lighting. The Blue Star Awards are sponsored by and held at Starlight Theatre.
What's a Star Gram? What's involved with running the Star Gram table?
Star Grams are a neat way to show support for your student -- ALL students -- even the crew. Stop by the Star Gram table on show night and purchase a paper "Star" or show themed paper. You write your words of encouragement on the Star. We then attach some candy to the star, collect all the Star Grams in a bag, and present the bag to students at the end of the show. They love them! Running the Star Gram table is easy - you sell a Star, have the customer write on it, attach a piece of candy to the star then place the star in a bag. Pack up the money box and take it with you if you're going to watch the show.
What are "Break a Leg" gifts? What's involved in "chairing" the BAL gifts?
BAL gifts are an Opening Night tradition. We find show-themed trinkets for every member of the cast/crew/pit. We make sure one BAL gift is in each bag labeled with the name of cast/crew/pit prior to the show. As the the person in charge of the BAL gift, you collect the donations, assemble the treat bags and deliver them on opening night. (Or get them to a board member.)
What is the Matinee lunch?
Often we give a "matinee" performance during the school day. Students from other schools (middle/elementary) come watch the show. It's a great way to share theatre and a true dress rehearsal. Because they are occupied most of the day, we provide lunch.
What is involved with running the concession stand? Will I miss any of the show?
Running concessions can be bagging popcorn prior to show, selling candy, soda, etc or it can be just selling cookies and water. It depends on the production. We close up the concession stand right before the show starts and re-open it during intermission. You won't miss the show!
What's a "Shout Out"?
We hand out playbills to the audience at each show. You can put a "shout out" in the playbill for everyone to see. It's basically words of encouragement to your student. (Cast/Crew/Pit) You can see examples here.
How can I help with the Silent Auction?
This is done once yearly for the Silent Auction tables set in the lobby during the musical. We really, really need donations of various items people might want to bid on. These can be gift certificates, themed baskets, lessons, tickets, trips, getaways, crafts, or products. (One year we had a donation of a small tailgating grill, another year we had a Vespa scooter!) Please talk to anyone you know who might have something from their business, hobby or event to donate. Please consider sending in a basket, product or gift certificate.
Where does the money raised at concessions, for Shout Outs, and the silent auction go?
1. Operating costs for the year: concessions, food, decorations, supplies
2. Student Scholarships: One $1000 from LSHS Theatre Parents Booster Club, One $1000 from Lee's Summit Education Foundation.
3. Theatre Department: Sometimes if we are able to raise enough money, we are able to donate a chunk to the theatre department for new equipment. in past years, we were able to present the department with a check for $700 for a monitor to go in the makeup room so students can see what’s going on and be ready for their cues, Off-set State Thespian Festival costs, Off-set NYC 2023 costs $150/student.
